The End of An Era

Joann Fabrics, a cornerstone in the crafting and fabric retail industry since 1943, has announced significant store closures amid financial challenges. On February 12, 2025, the company filed a motion seeking court approval to close approximately 500 of its 800 stores nationwide as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

This decision follows a previous Chapter 11 filing in March 2024, during which Joann aimed to reduce its $1 billion debt by half. Despite their efforts, continued inventory and financial issues have led to the second bankruptcy filing in January 2025.

Where Is It Happening?

The closures will impact stores across 49 states, with California being the most affected, facing 61 store closures. I am deeply hurt as a Cali girl. Other states experiencing significant reductions include Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin.

In the Bay Area, over a dozen locations are slated for closure, including stores in Concord, El Cerrito, Dublin, San Leandro, Daly City, Cupertino, Morgan Hill, Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, San Mateo, Redwood City, and Corte Madera.

The Plans Moving Forward

Joann's management has stated that "right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward." The company plans to begin store-closing sales on February 15, 2025, which may last for several months. I will definitely take advantage of any sales for fiber arts crafts.

As Joann navigates this restructuring process, approximately 300 stores are expected to remain operational. However, the long-term fate of these locations remains uncertain as the company seeks potential buyers to maintain operations.

Customers are encouraged to take advantage of liquidation sales at the affected stores, offering discounts on a wide range of crafting supplies and home décor items. My husband wants to check out paint supplies for his Warhammer figurines. Updates

As of February 25, 2025 it has been announced that ALL 800 of Joann's locations will be closed. Liquidation sales will continue until nothing is left. Consumers have begun panic-buying. Please remember, do not be mean to the staff or ask them personal questions; they are affected in a much different way than most of us.
