Updated: Nov 25

Actual and Factual

Let's start with the facts straight from their website!

Basic Stitch is categorized as a number 4 or worsted weight yarn. The suggested hooks and needles size is 5mm. It is 100% acrylic, machine-washable and dryer-safe; plus it's super soft. This yarn is its own family, with a whopping 76 swatches created!

The yarn measurements are as follows:

  • 185yd/170m in solids

  • 153yd/140m in prints

  • 157yd/144m in moulines

  • 115yd/105m in reflective

  • 159yd/145m in tweed

The yarn weights are as follows:

  • 3.5oz/100g in solids

  • 3oz/85g in prints/moulines/tweed

  • 2.5oz/70g in reflective

TANGENT!

If you, like me, are new to the word mouline, let's break it down. Mouline is a plied yarn with a lighting effect created by a strand of white cotton wrapped around felted wood. (In this case acrylic) When the yarn is dyed, the felted wool (acrylic) absorbs the color while the plant-based cotton fiber resists it, maintaining its crisp white appearance. For the Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn, the swatch black&cloudy white, is a good example of mouline yarn.

At the time of this post, Lion Brand offers 49 swatches on their website; this fluctuates. One of the newest groups within this family is Skein Tones, which was released in 2021. Many amigurumi doll artists boast how this collection allows them more versatility with skin tones and complexions. Many other fiber artists just love the addition of more neutral tones for wardrobe and accessory pieces such as cardigans and purses.

My Experience

I love the feel of this yarn as some acrylics can be scratchy, and it tends to be affordable which is great with how the economy currently is. I've used this yarn to make test swatches of stitch patterns and amigurumi. I have experienced the dreaded "yarn squeak" when using this yarn; my first time ever out of many years of crocheting! In my case, I think it had to do with the hook I was using and my tension. All in all, this yarn is a 10 out of 10 for me and I will always have it in my stash.

My Favorite Projects for This Yarn

I have mainly utilized Basic Stitch on amigurumi. I went on a splurge of stuffing and eyes while pattern testing and fell in love with this yarn. Lion Brand offers a variety of patterns here, you can use their filters to narrow down your search to using only Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn.
